The SDR Engineering staff has been responsible for designing and detailing bridges
in accordance with the AASHTO Bridge Codes, Ontario Bridge Code, Florida DOT and
Texas DOT design criteria and specifications. The bridges designed by SDR Engineering
also meet Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) criteria for bridge design and construction.
SDR Engineering employees are experts on concrete segmental bridges, cable-stayed
bridges, major steel bridges and seismic design requirements.
SDR Engineering, Inc. designed the repairs to meet the specifications of the Florida
DOT on the current 6,700-foot bridge in the Florida Keys using Fiber Reinforced
Polymer (FRP) repair techniques on the pre-stressed concrete pile bents.
Lee County, FL
SR-45 Bridge Over Spring Creek
Our staff designed the widening of an existing pre-stressed concrete voided flat
slab bridge. We also developed conceptual studies and implemented a unique superstructure
design utilizing pre-stressed concrete solid slabs with cast-in-place structural
overlay to eliminate the need for transverse post-tensioning on the widened portion.
SDR Engineering, Inc. was also responsible for preparing contract plans, quantities
and specifications.
North Palm Beach, FL
MacArthur Park Pedestrian Bridge
For this 1,400-foot long timber truss bridge with pre-cast/pre-stressed concrete
pile bentsour engineers utilized “build from the top?design and construction erection
techniques with 40-foot spans in order to protect the sensitive environment and
to satisfy the aesthetic requirements.
Pasco County, FL
SR-56 Bridge Over I-75
span lengths of 160-feet, the longest span of this type in Florida. Our staff was
responsible for all tasks, including all superstructure and substructure design
and detail.
Tallahassee, FL
Park Avenue Bridge Over CSX Railroad
This unique superstructure was designed utilizing pre-stressed concrete solid slabs
with a cast-in-place deck. The slabs were then post-tensioned longitudinally in
order to obtain the shallowest bridge depth possible due to roadway profile grade
and vertical clearance restrictions.
Tallahassee, FL
Texas Street and Gaines Street Bridges
This unique superstructure was designed by SDR engineers utilizing pre-cast and
pre-stressed “Double-Tee?units for the first time in the State of Florida. These
units were then post-tensioned transversely for deck strengthening. These bridges
serve as models for the FDOT Standard Details subsequently developed.
Tampa, FL
Harbour Island East Access Bridge
The Harbour Island East Access Bridge is an AASHTO Type IV bridge that uses pre-stressed
concrete girders with pile bents. Using complex geometry, our staff designed an
800 foot long continuous bridge deck with expansion joints only at the abutments.
Boston, MA
Central Artery, I-93/I-90 Interchanges
The I-93/I90 Interchanges in Boston Massachusetts were designed by SDR engineers.
These Segmental concrete box girder bridges were constructed by the balance cantilever
method. The interchanges have a viaduct that is 2,027 feet in length, four ramps
constructed vary in length from 425 feet to 1,411 feet, and a substructure consisting
of a combination of straddle bents with integral pier segments and single pier segments.
The design for widening and rehabilitation of a segmental bridge on the Garden State
Parkway was completed by SDR Engineering, Inc. We also performed various designs
including transverse analysis of the superstructure, longitudinal flexural analysis,
column design, seismic design, bearing design, abutment design, design of drilled
shaft and pile foundations, and preparation of contract plans. The bridge has 21
spans in four superstructure units. (Note: The Steel Plate Girder Alternate was
the low bid for construction.)
SDR Engineers designed the widening and rehabilitation of the Edison Bridge o over
the Raritan River which is a steel and concrete girder bridge. We performed tasks
including column design, seismic design, bearing design, abutment design, and design
of pile foundations. This project was a Design/Build Contract.
Puerto Rico
Tren Urbano Railway Bridges
SDR Engineering, Inc. designed a segmental railway bridge system in Puerto Rico
with single and dual track box girders constructed by using span-by-span construction
methods. We also checked the seismic analysis on the substructure for replacing
skewed straddle bents by single column with semi-circular ends.
Austin, TX
Texas SH 130, Turnpike Corridor
SDR staff designed the bridge standardization to streamline over 120 bridges for
the new 94-mile long turnpike corridor. Our studies included foundation and superstructure
design for various types of bridge configurations. Superstructure types that were
used included standard AASHTO and Modified Bulb-Tee pre-stressed concrete girders
and structural steel girders. Substructure types included drilled shaft foundations
and straddle bents.
In addition to performing bridge designs and detailing as noted above, SDR Engineering
staff has served as Design Review Consultants to Florida DOT. Structural analyses
and plan reviews were performed for projects such as:
SDR Engineers performed complete design analysis and plan review of the post-tensioned
concrete segmental box girder alternate on the Apalachicola Bay Bridge. Our staff
utilized time-dependent analysis computer programs for design verification and our
construction methods used span-by-span and “propped cantilever?techniques. (Note:
The Bulb-Tee Concrete Girder Alternate was the low bid for construction.)
Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport / US-1
These four ramp bridges of pre-cast concrete, post-tensioned segmental box girders
were designed by our engineers. We were responsible for reviewing and approval of
- all shop drawings
- reinforcing steel
- post-tensioning materials/placement/tendon stressing/grouting
- pot bearings
- expansion joints
- casting curves
- erection manuals
- erection equipment
- erection procedures;instrumental in coordinating changed construction sequencing
due to railroad requirements, modifications to the contract plans, communicating
with the Contractor, the Subcontractors and the Specialty Engineer, and casting
of the segments.
Ft. Lauderdale, FL
I-595 Interchange Segmental Bridges
SDR Engineering performed design verification of post-tensioned anchorage zone reinforcing,
concrete box girder reinforcing, construction techniques and repair procedures.
St. Petersburg, FL
Sunshine Skyway Bridge / I-275
SDR Engineers performed a review of a post-tensioning anchorage zone reinforcing,
cable-stay anchor block reinforcing and construction loads verification.
The SDR staff stands ready to provide the client with the best possible bridge design
services available.
